BACTERIAL DISEASESFish do not usually suffer bacterial diseases, unless they are farmed fish or fish restricted to a tank or bowl. Under these circumstances of potential stagnation, overcrowding, restricted space, higher concentrations of excreta and higher quantity of nutrients in the water, bacteria can gain the upper hand. The conventional method of treatment is by the addition of antibiotics to the water. This raises the spectre of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, both in the environment and in the fish, which may be destined for human consumption. Antibiotics may also encourage fungal infections. At the AVMC, we make nosodes for infectious diseases of this type. Such methods have proved beneficial in former cases. We cooperate closely with the veterinary surgeon, who has responsibility for the fish locally. The AVMC can supply more information on request. Copyright © AVMC August 2002

FUNGAL DISEASESFish do not usually suffer fungal diseases, unless they are farmed fish or kept restricted in a tank or bowl. Under these circumstances of potential stagnation, overcrowding, restricted space, higher concentrations of excreta and higher quantity of nutrients in the water, fungi can gain the upper hand. Tail, gills and fins are often the first affected, possibly owing to their more delicate and exposed structure. Patches can appear anywhere on the body, however. The conventional method of treatment is by the addition of anti-fungal antibiotics to the water. The more traditional methods, of using crystals of potassium iodide or malachite green, are effective but are only practical for small tanks. At the AVMC, we make nosodes for infectious diseases of this type. Such methods have proved beneficial in former cases. We cooperate closely with the veterinary surgeon, who has responsibility for the fish locally. The AVMC can supply more information on request. Copyright © AVMC August 2002
SHOCKFish can suffer shock from temperature change, transport, injury, fighting, handling or from water changes. Homeopathy is able to provide a method of treatment, which can help the fish to overcome their distressed and shocked state. Arnica and Aconite are the obvious choices. These can be put into the water, thereby providing a simple route of medication. It is advisable to do this whenever fish are moved or the water is changed. Bach’s Rescue Remedy may also be beneficial. The AVMC can supply more information on request. Copyright © AVMC August 2002
STRESSFish can suffer stress from temperature change, transport, injury, fighting, handling or from water changes. The overcrowding of fish in farm tanks or in home collections can also be a source of stress. Homeopathy is able to provide a method of treatment, which can help the fish to overcome their stress responses. Clearly, it is advisable to try also to reduce any known source of stress, in order to raise quality of life. Homeopathic treatment with Aconitum, Aurum, Lycopodium, Argentum nitricum, Gelsemium or Lachesis may prove useful, depending upon the stress stimulus. Homeopathy provides a very broad range of possibilities, beyond these few named remedies. Bach’s Rescue Remedy may also be beneficial. The AVMC can supply more information on request.
