Alternative Veterinary
Medicine Centre The Work of the AVMC
At the Alternative Veterinary Medicine Centre, we use alternative therapy as a first-line treatment, with conventional medicine only being necessary, on very rare occasions, in support of this. The work brings great pleasure, not least because the animals appear to enjoy it, while the majority appear to benefit. All species are treated, from farm to pet animals, including wild animals, reptiles and birds but the majority of our work is with horses and ponies (whether competition, racing or companion), small animals (e.g. dogs, cats and other pets) and organic farms. The work is mostly of a 'referral' or 'second opinion' nature, most cases coming via another veterinary surgeon. Dogs and cats are usually brought to the Centre (although domiciliary visits can be arranged), while horses and farm animals are usually seen at their homes. The practice provides a relaxing, rural atmosphere, which animals rarely perceive as ‘veterinary’, with a permanent staff, who are able to offer support and helpful advice. We have an extensive pharmacy, including many thousand Homeopathic, Herbal, Bach, Schuessler, Essential Oil and Nutritional remedies, so that any required medication is almost always available at the time of your visit. Requests for repeat prescriptions are usually posted within 24 hours (one working day). We travel widely, to see horses, ponies, donkeys and farm animals and are willing to do house-calls for domestic pets. Nowhere in Britain is too far but the usual area of travel (green shaded in map) is in an area from The Wash to The Wirral, from Leicestershire and Lincolnshire to Dorset, East Devon and Kent and from Herefordshire and Shropshire to Norfolk and Essex. We are frequently asked to visit Worcs, Glos, Wilts, Oxon, Bucks, Herts, Beds, Berks, Surrey, Sussex, Hants, Dorset, Somerset, Avon, W. Midlands, Warks, Northants, Leics, Cambs, Essex, Suffolk & Herefordshire and the general London area. Costs are shared fairly amongst those on a round, with no one paying for someone else's travel.
Distant clients, who wish to bring their horses to us, are able to meet us at a local holistic equine establishment. For one-off treatments, a meeting can be arranged. For longer-term treatments, horses can be left at the premises, by arrangement. We have attended patients in Denmark, Sweden, France, Channel Islands and have co-operated with veterinarians in U.S.A., Canada, Spain, Portugal and Italy, with ill animals. The AVMC is conducting objective analysis of clinical outcomes from cases seen. These results are being updated on an ongoing basis. To view them, click here. We abide by the provisions of the Code of Practice, published by the Faculty of Homeopathy and by that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Mr Day is a specialist in veterinary homeopathy. As we treat our patients holistically, all aspects of an animal's health and lifestyle have to be scrutinised. Our aim is not only to stimulate the body to heal itself but also to remove any obstacles to recovery, thereby allowing the healing process to work unfettered. The remarkable innate healing capabilities of the body are thus released and activated. The main therapies used at AVMC are Homeopathy (Homoeopathy or Homśopathy), Acupuncture, Herbs, Bach Flowers, Schuessler Tissue Salts, Aromatherapy (Essential Oils), Chiropractic, Laser, Ultrasound and Nutrition. Natural nutrition and dietary advice is a mainstay of our work, underpinning all other therapies and is the platform upon which we build health. Without healthy natural feeding, compatible with an animal's hereditary and evolutionary needs, medicine cannot function to its full capacity. Appropriate natural feeding advice, for a health-stimulating diet, is therefore offered for each patient, whether equine, farm or domestic. The AVMC accepts referrals in Veterinary Acupuncture, Veterinary Homeopathy, Veterinary Herbal Medicine, back problems in dogs, back problems in horses, back problems in cats, back problems in all species. We do not shun modern diagnostic techniques (e.g. blood-sampling, X-ray, ultra-sound scan, urinalysis) but, on the contrary, embrace their findings in the holistic assessment of our patients. We do not advise invasive diagnostic procedures but, if an owner wishes to have them done, we will incorporate those findings too. We see students at the AVMC, from time to time, to help them with their extra-mural studies. This is a vital key to the perpetuation of knowledge and understanding. We do not expect students to be sympathetic to alternative and holistic views but we do expect them to be open-minded, which is the only scientifically-supportable attitude to hold. We are purposely not linked with any commercial organisation whatsoever. We do not rely on sales of products for survival. We are therefore able to offer wholly independent and impartial advice, with no link to sales, on any aspect of our work. We test all therapies on ourselves, before using them on animals. In this way, we are assured of their ‘user-friendliness’. The Centre was the first of its kind in the UK, being established in 1987 (twenty years ago this year). Mr Day has, however, been treating animals with homeopathy and other natural medicines since 1972. At the Centre we generate many articles of an educational nature, we teach world-wide, we are heavily involved in animal welfare issues, nationally & internationally, we rescue and rehabilitate horses and several landmark books have been published. The AVMC has also been active in clinical research into veterinary homeopathy. Greater detail of this ancillary work is to be found in Mr Day's Curriculum Vitae and in the other pages of this site, some of which are currently being developed. Chris Day also holds official posts in national and international organisations. The Centre is therefore involved, to a greater or lesser extent, in the day-to-day activities of those organisations. The AVMC and the work of Christopher Day have been the subject of numerous television, video and radio features, in addition to its appearance in newspapers and magazines. These have described the whole spectrum of work carried out at or from the Centre, whether medicine or welfare activities. We can visit from Wales to London, from Devon to Kent, from South to North and from Bristol to the Wash and East Anglia.
