FAQ Acupuncture

Video: Sam the cat receiving acupuncture, completely unrestrained:

Cats suffer a range of diseases, some similar to those of mankind and some uniquely their own. Cats are very willing and cooperative patients, who generally respond positively to veterinary acupuncture treatment. Cats accept acupuncture needling remarkably well and we believe this is because they are extremely 'body-aware' and have a good understanding of what they need. If a treatment does not fit in with their perception of their particular needs, they will usually find a way to show us. We do not sedate patients for acupuncture, since we believe it can alter the body's perception of and responses to treatment, quite apart from its potential toxicity. It also masks patient responses, which are very important in our interpretation of the acupuncture treatment programme. Furthermore, we believe a patient has a right to have a say in treatment.

At the AVMC, the Acupuncture Vet performs a full chiropractic check on each patient, correcting any problems discovered, so that skeletal alignment and muscle tone are optimised, prior to acupuncture treatment.

We use LASER stimulation of acupuncture points (Acupuncture-by-LASER) for some patients, in preference to needling. Cats are well able to demonstrate which suits them best. In many cases, we use both.

We also use Moxibustion or Electroacupuncture, as needed, for acupuncture point stimulation.
