* Headshaking in Horses *

We have already treated a number of patients with this problem, as of 10th May 2013

We have found that our most effective treatment to date is an integrated program of Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Chiropractic Manipulation & Diet

Patients have appeared to respond well this season

* HOT CARS!*

Even filtered sunlight on a cool day can make a car insufferably and dangerously hot.

Please do not leave dogs in closed cars – conditions can change very rapidly.

in many cases, during the summer months especially, it may be wiser to leave the dog at home than to take the risk.

“I’m backing the TigerTime campaign to save the last 3,200 wild tigers on earth.  That is a shockingly low figure!  One of the main threats to the wild tiger is the continuing trade in tiger skins and other body parts.  The TigerTime team currently have 104,000 signatures on a vital petition calling for a ban on this ‘tiger trade’.  We need your help to drive this up to 250,000.  If you are shocked that the wild tiger is so threatened, please sign the petition here www.bantigertrade.com. If you could, please pass this on to as many other people as you can.  The situation is so dire, that only a massive show of ‘people power’ can save this iconic species. Signing the petition takes 30 seconds, I really do hope you will sign.”

This is the website of Christopher, holistic vet, acupuncture vet, herb vet and homeopathic vet. The AVMC provides a traditional and caring environment for our work and for our care of animals. Since the veterinary practice is holistic, we have a very broad, generalist approach to veterinary medicine and to caring for animals and their welfare, integrating the various natural therapies for optimum health. Hence, this website is a very comprehensive (and growing) information resource, with over 600 pages available – not for the faint-hearted! A choice of two different simple initial navigation formats is therefore offered here, to help you to find your way about the major headings and to ensure a comfortable and positive experience. Comments welcome.

Pony Laminitis

Watch for early signs of discomfort/stiffness

Spring and summer are major risk-times for pony laminitis.  Watch out for warmth in the feet (esp. front) and hesitancy on turning tightly, esp. on a hard surface.

Especially vulnerable at times of changing seasons are those with Cushings or similar signs.

Laminitis can still occur in the winter, whether from eating frosted grass or from standing in icy conditions.

Avoid herbicides and artificial fertilizers. Frosted grass from late frosts can also raise the risks.

Keep an eye on your pony’s weight.

Spot-on Flea Treatments

While we have long been concerned that there may be nerve toxicity connected with certain spot-on flea treatments, the strongest suggestion yet has come from a client who has reported repeated hind limb weakness in a cat following spot-on treatment and in another of her cats, that we had successfully treated for megacolon, relapse after spot-on flea treatment.

This still does not amount to proof but gives cause for concern. Remember too that the family is also exposed to these chemicals.

There are more natural methods of flea control

N.B.: At the AVMC, we try not to be ‘bogged down’ by terminology or ideology. Much argument accompanies discussions on nomenclature. We do not mind whether we are called holistic, complimentary, alternative or natural. Likewise, it does not matter whether we are described as a holistic, natural, herbal, homeopathic, chiropractic, acupuncture or integrated veterinary practice. The medicine and treatments we practice are the best we can offer, for each patient and it matters not whether it is perceived as holistic medicine, alternative medicine, complimentary medicine, natural medicine, complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM – CAVM) or integrated medicine. We offer traditional standards of professional care, in an integrated package that is sympathetic to the individual animal’s needs. Although we specialize in alternative therapies, seeking alternatives to conventional drug therapy, we do not shun conventional therapy, per se, considering its worth in each case. No truly holistic vet can ignore the existence of conventional drugs which, while quite unable to cure chronic disease, on rare occasions may be the only way to control distressing or painful symptoms. It is noteworthy how much the body can achieve without drugs, however. Our holistic and integrated service is offered in support of animal patients, ‘owners’ and carers and the veterinary profession. We are always willing to assist vets in the UK and worldwide in providing integrated care for their patients, providing the natural therapy component of a treatment program.

The AVMC was the first dedicated holistic vet practice in the UK and is centrally sited in England – specializing in holistic and integrated veterinary care.

We see animals at the AVMC premises, providing holistic care and treatment and we regularly visit an area stretching from Wales to London, from Devon to Kent, from South to North Midlands and from Bristol, the Southwest and West Midlands to the Wash and East Anglia. Visits are mainly to see horses but we can also arrange farm visits and house calls (home visits) for domestic pets. We see many patients from London and visit London homes.

Holistic, Alternative, Natural or complimentary?

We are also open to either spelling of the words homeopathic / homoeopathic and homeopathy / homoeopathy, the older spellings being more correct linguistically with the newer spellings being more convenient and more ‘web friendly’.

“Information is power”

Holistic vet at work – main treatments offered (see Therapies):

  • Homeopathic treatment – Veterinary Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture treatment – Veterinary Acupuncture
  • Herbal treatment – Veterinary Phytotherapy
  • Aromatherapy treatment – Veterinary Aromatherapy
  • Chiropractic treatment – Veterinary Chiropractic
  • Nutritional advice – Feeding advice
  • LASER treatment – LASER Therapy
  • Ultrasound treatment – Ultrasound Therapy
  • Back manipulation – Back treatment
  • Bach Flowers
  • Holistic medicine – Holistic veterinary medicine
  • Flower Essences
  • Tissue Salts
  • Holistic therapy – Holistic treatment – Holistic care
  • Holistic advice
  • Integrated medicine
  • Anthroposophical medicines – Anthroposophy
  • Natural medicine – Alternative medicine – complimentary medicine
  • CAM – CAVM
  • Natural Feeding – Natural Diet

These approaches represent a philosophy that is truly ‘alternative’ to the current conventional norm but the use of alternative therapies does not do away with the need for a thorough examination and assessment. Nor does it preclude the use of modern diagnostic techniques where necessary. A holistic vet will take into account all these things, in addition to closely scrutinizing lifestyle, diet, environment, riding, tack, saddling, shoeing, grazing, stabling, farm management etc., depending upon the species.

AVMC – the home of holistic vet, natural vet, homeopathic vet, acupuncture vet, herbal vet and chiropractic vet with 40 years of experience in the field of natural therapy, practicing integrated veterinary medicine. Our premises is ‘lived in’, with no herbicides or pesticides used. We pride ourselves on a rich and diverse wild life population around us. We have a deep respect for Nature and with this care for Nature vet work does not need to be environmentally unfriendly.

We accept no sponsorship from industry, commerce, insurance companies or any other commercial interest and we do not depend upon product or medicine sales, so our advice is truly independent and unaffected by profit motivation. Likewise, we do not promote commercial activities, so our links do not promote marketing material. We do not pay for search engine favors. Sadly, even in the holistic and natural medicine worlds, there are vets whose advice is attended by potential profits from product sales or links to companies.

Chris D has also contributed articles to Squidoo, on homeopathy, acupuncture, herbs and herbal medicine, aromatherapy, laminitis, head shaking (headshaking), foot and mouth disease (FMD) and homeopathic medicine, farm medicine, holistic medicine, rocks, minerals and crystals in nature, natural feeding, dogs, cats, horses and ponies, back pain, chiropractic, geology and other topics. Hippocrates states: “The Physician treats, Nature heals“, recognising that it is not the medicine that heals the body but the body itself.

The AVMC offers veterinary acupuncture, veterinary homeopathy, veterinary herb medicine (veterinary herbs / veterinary phytotherapy), veterinary chiropractic treatment and other ‘alternative medicine’ options, in a friendly, homely and relaxed environment, generally much-appreciated by our animal visitors.
