Down
Cruelty in the feather down industry
Humans exploit animals dreadfully and, when money is involved, the toll in animal suffering can be horrendous. For profit, birds such as ducks and geese can be plucked alive. This is a very painful process and leaves bleeding wounds and often tears in the skin, which may or may not be stitched (rarely with anaesthetic!).
If you consider buying a product that is down-filled, you have no way of telling whether it is the product of live-plucking of birds, a profitable by-product of the foie gras industry or humanely obtained. The best way to avoid cruelty is to avoid products containing down.
