AVMC - 25 years old in March 2012!

This is the website of Christopher Day, holistic vet, acupuncture vet, herb vet and homeopathic vet. The AVMC provides a traditional and caring environment for our work and for our care of animals. Since the veterinary practice is holistic, we have a very broad, generalist approach to veterinary medicine and to caring for animals and their welfare, integrating the various natural therapies for optimum health. Hence, this website is a very comprehensive (and growing) information resource, with over 600 pages available - not for the faint-hearted! A choice of two different simple initial navigation formats is therefore offered here, to help you to find your way about the major headings and to ensure a comfortable and positive experience. Comments welcome.

Pony Laminitis

Don't sound the 'all clear' yet.

Spring and summer are major risk-times for pony laminitis. However, we are still seeing cases in Autumn and Winter. Especially vulnerable at this time of changing seasons are those with Cushings or similar signs. Watch out for warmth in the feet (esp. front) and hesitancy on turning tightly, esp. on a hard surface.

Avoid herbicides and artificial fertilisers. Frosted grass and deep snow can also raise the risks.

Keep an eye on your pony's weight.

Health Warning

Oak - Acorns

Now it's Autumn, if you have a treasured oak tree in your garden, field or hedge, try to avoid excessive ingestion of acorns by your horse or pony. Horses may eat a few acorns without undue risk but can acquire an avid desire for them. Too many and there is a risk of gastro-enteritis or even kidney damage, from the tannin.

Keep a watch on your horse's grazing habits and fence off an area around the oak, if too much interest is shown.

N.B.: At the AVMC, we try not to be 'bogged down' by terminology or ideology. Much argument accompanies discussions on nomenclature. We do not mind whether we are called holistic, complementary, alternative or natural. Likewise, it does not matter whether we are described as a holistic, natural, herbal, homeopathic, chiropractic, acupuncture or integrated veterinary practice. The medicine and treatments we practise are the best we can offer, for each patient and it matters not whether it is perceived as holistic medicine, alternative medicine, complementary medicine, natural medicine, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM - CAVM) or integrated medicine. We offer traditional standards of professional care, in an integrated package that is sympathetic to the individual animal's needs. Although we specialise in alternative therapies, seeking alternatives to conventional drug therapy, we do not shun conventional therapy, per se, considering its worth in each case. No truly holistic vet can ignore the existence of conventional drugs which, while quite unable to cure chronic disease, on rare occasions may be the only way to control distressing or painful symptoms. It is noteworthy how much the body can achieve without drugs, however. Our holistic and integrated service is offered in support of animal patients, owners and carers and the veterinary profession. We are always willing to assist vets in the UK and worldwide in providing integrated care for their patients, providing the natural therapy component of a treatment programme.

The AVMC was the first dedicated holistic vet practice in the UK and is centrally sited in England - specialising in holistic and integrated veterinary care.

We see animals at the AVMC premises, providing holistic care and treatment and we regularly visit an area stretching from Wales to London, from Devon to Kent, from South to North Midlands and from Bristol, the Southwest and West Midlands to the Wash and East Anglia. Visits are mainly to see horses but we can also arrange farm visits and house calls (home visits) for domestic pets. We see many patients from London and visit London homes.

Holistic, Alternative, Natural or Complementary?

We are also open to either spelling of the words homeopathic / homoeopathic and homeopathy / homoeopathy, the older spellings being more correct linguistically with the newer spellings being more convenient and more 'web friendly'.

Chris Day is mainly known for his work as an acupuncture vet, herbal vet, homeopathic vet, chiropractic vet, holistic vet and natural vet. However, he also uses a wider spectrum of natural therapies, in order to offer each patient the best of integrated care.

These approaches represent a philosophy that is truly 'alternative' to the current conventional norm but the use of alternative therapies does not do away with the need for a thorough examination and assessment. Nor does it preclude the use of modern diagnostic techniques where necessary. A holistic vet will take into account all these things, in addition to closely scrutinising lifestyle, diet, environment, riding, tack, saddling, shoeing, grazing, stabling, farm management etc., depending upon the species.

Our office hours are:

Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays: 09.00 - 17.00 (except bank holidays)

Tuesdays: 09.00 - 13.00

AVMC - the home and practice of Chris Day - holistic vet, natural vet, homeopathic vet, acupuncture vet, herbal vet and chiropractic vet with 40 years of experience in the field of natural therapy, practising integrated veterinary medicine. Our premises is 'lived in', with no herbicides or pesticides used. We pride ourselves on a rich and diverse wild life population around us. We have a deep respect for Nature and with this care for Nature vet work does not need to be environmentally unfriendly.

We invite and accept referrals for holistic and alternative medicine treatment.

Chris Day is a vet who qualified in 1972 and whose parents were both extremely vocational vets. He therefore studied veterinary life and veterinary medicine from a very early age. He started to use homeopathy on himself, from about 10 or 11 years of age. He bought books on veterinary acupuncture and on homeopathic medicine, while at veterinary school, in 1969. He studied these and started to use vet homeopathy in his first year as a vet. Herbal medicine and acupuncture followed soon after. He became fascinated by chiropractic treatment in the mid-70s. All this explains his holistic approach, his dedication to patient care and his integrated use of the different therapies, each having been carefully built on the previously-studied techniques. He thus has many years of experience in the various therapies and has been brought up in an environment in which patient care was always paramount.

As herb vet / herbal vet, Chris Day uses traditional Western Herbs, which naturally form the indigenous plant medicine of his patients. As homeopathic vet, he uses many different homeopathic methodologies, not being confined by any single doctrine or dogma in his delivery of veterinary homeopathy. As acupuncture vet, he uses needling, LASER stimulation, moxibustion, electro-acupuncture and acupressure in his veterinary acupuncture work. As chiropractic vet, he examines every patient for correct skeletal alignment and offers manipulation for those that require it. As holistic vet, he integrates these therapies, as needed and advises natural, species-suitable feeding. As natural vet, he works with Nature and has a deep respect for Nature (The physician treats - Nature heals - Hippocrates).

Likewise, we do not promote commercial activities, so our links do not promote marketing material. We do not pay for search engine favours. Sadly, even in the holistic and natural medicine worlds, there are vets whose advice is attended by potential profits from product sales or links to companies.

Chris Day has also contributed articles to Squidoo, on homeopathy, acupuncture, herbs and herbal medicine, aromatherapy, laminitis, head shaking (headshaking), foot and mouth disease (FMD) and homeopathic medicine, farm medicine, holistic medicine, rocks, minerals and crystals in nature, natural feeding, dogs, cats, horses and ponies, back pain, chiropractic, geology and other topics. These are quite light-hearted, as befits such a forum. They are more by way of introducing casual visitors to the subjects.

We have a deep respect for Nature and work with Nature

Chris Day is variously known as a holistic horse vet, holistic dog vet, holistic cat vet and back vet but we treat all species with all types of problems.

Hippocrates states: "The Physician treats, Nature heals", recognising that it is not the medicine that heals the body but the body itself.

The AVMC offers veterinary acupuncture, veterinary homeopathy, veterinary herb medicine (veterinary herbs / veterinary phytotherapy), veterinary chiropractic treatment and other 'alternative medicine' options, in a friendly, homely and relaxed environment, generally much-appreciated by our animal visitors.
